The A22 is the road north and it decides any airport departure: single carriageway in stretches around Hailsham and Uckfield, with the approach to the M23 slow in the morning. We usually leave earlier than the mapping suggests. In town, the one way system around Terminus Road and Cornfield Road catches out drivers who do not know it, and the seafront itself closes for events several times a year, including the summer airshow, when the whole promenade changes shape.

Tennis week at Devonshire Park in late June fills the hotels along Grand Parade and adds traffic to Carlisle Road and the western seafront through the middle of the day, so we plan set down away from the main gates at those times. Journeys out to Beachy Head, Birling Gap and the Cuckmere valley are lovely and genuinely exposed, with limited parking and gusting wind, so we agree in advance where the car will wait rather than assuming there is room.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
