The fifth of November is the date to plan around. Lewes closes its centre for the bonfire societies, the station is shut to arrivals through the evening, and no vehicle crosses the town from late afternoon until well after midnight. We collect from outside the cordon, usually towards Landport or the Kingston side, and agree the short walk with you in advance. Glyndebourne evenings through the summer festival are the other fixed point, with the long dinner interval making the return time entirely predictable.

For the airport run it is the A27 rather than the A23 that decides the timing. Queues build at the Southerham and Beddingham roundabouts through the morning peak, and again whenever a fixture empties out at Falmer. When the coast road looks heavy we leave by the A26 and pick the A23 up at Pyecombe instead. For a first flight of the day out of Gatwick we would ordinarily suggest setting off around three hours ahead.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
