The A55 is the north's main artery and it has two known chokepoints west of here: the Conwy tunnel beneath the estuary and the pair of headland tunnels at Penmaenbach and Pen-y-Clip. A closure at any of them puts everything onto the old road through Conwy town, which is narrow, walled and slow. Heading east, the Halkyn and Northop stretches thicken in the morning peak, and for an early flight we allow for one of these going wrong.

Locally, Eirias Park sets the evening timings. Concert and fixture nights fill the car parks off Abergele Road and the surrounding streets, and the exit onto the A55 backs up for a while once the crowd leaves, so we collect from an agreed point a few minutes away rather than at the gates. In high summer the promenade car parks are full by ten and the seafront road is best avoided altogether.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
