The summit of the A44 at Eisteddfa Gurig, below Pumlumon, is the highest point on the road and the first place locally to hold snow. Between December and March we watch it, and when it is drifting or closed the alternative runs a long way round by the A470 and the A489 through Newtown and Machynlleth, which can add an hour or more. For a winter morning flight we would ordinarily travel the evening before and stay nearer the airport instead.

In town the constraints are gentler but no less real. Marine Terrace and the promenade fill with parked cars from mid-morning through the summer, Great Darkgate Street and the lanes behind it are narrow and largely one-way, and graduation week makes the Penglais campus slow to enter and slower to leave. We use the station forecourt or an agreed point on North Parade for collections, and confirm it before the day rather than negotiate it at the kerb.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
