The most useful thing to know is that there is no second road. The A55 across Anglesey and the Britannia Bridge onto the mainland form the only practical route, and when the bridge is restricted for high-sided vehicles in a gale, or shut altogether after an incident, everything funnels onto the Menai Suspension Bridge and its own limits. Before a sailing or a flight in poor weather we would leave a great deal earlier than the distance suggests.

Around the town, the roads out to South Stack and Trearddur Bay are narrow with passing places and busy on summer afternoons, and the climb to the mountain car park is steep and often full. Rail arrives at Holyhead beside the terminal, so meeting a train from Chester or Crewe is simple. For a very early sailing, a night nearby and a short transfer is usually kinder than a long drive through the small hours.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
