The M4 through Bridgend is generally kind, but two things change that. Roadworks or an incident between junctions thirty-four and thirty-seven push traffic onto the A48 through Pencoed and Laleston, a single carriageway with traffic lights that fills within minutes. And on a big rugby weekend the eastbound carriageway towards Cardiff loses its edge from late morning onwards. We will often set off early and wait at the far end rather than sit in it.

Heading north the character changes entirely. The A4061 up the Ogmore valley towards Treorchy climbs onto the Bwlch, an exposed mountain road with hairpin bends and a habit of closing in snow and high wind; the A4063 through Maesteg is gentler and still slow behind traffic.
