The A470 between Brecon and Merthyr Tydfil is the highest main road in South Wales and it decides most timings here. Snow gates stand at either end for good reason: the pass holds ice and drifting when the valleys below are merely wet, and a closure means a lengthy diversion by the A40 and the A465 through Abergavenny. From November to March we check the road before setting out and will bring a departure forward rather than take the risk.

In other seasons the difficulty is volume rather than weather. Pont ar Daf and the Storey Arms car parks fill from early morning on any bright weekend, walkers park along the verges, and the single carriageway becomes a queue behind caravans making for the coast. Around the Bulwark and Ship Street the streets are tight and largely one-way, so we agree a collection point near the promenade or the canal basin instead of the market square.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
