The A27 Chichester bypass is the local difficulty. Its roundabouts at Fishbourne, Whyke and Bognor are the slowest points in the district, and the queues build from mid afternoon and stay well into the evening, so any airport run leaving between four and seven needs extra time. Westbound towards Havant and the M27 is usually the better half. On summer weekends the A286 to West Wittering can queue for miles, and there is no useful way around it.

Goodwood dominates the calendar. The motoring weekends in summer and in September and the racing fixtures in July and August fill every hotel from Midhurst to Emsworth and turn the A285, the A286 and the lanes at Halnaker into a single slow procession. We set down and collect at agreed points away from the main gates and time departures around the sessions. Festival theatre evenings empty into Northgate at once, so we wait a street away rather than in the queue.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
