The centre is compact and stubbornly hilly, the theatres around Tudor Square punch far above their weight, and the steel and cutlery heritage still shows in the workshops of Kelham Island. Two large universities keep the place young, the advanced manufacturing corridor keeps it working, and the moors sit at the end of half the bus routes. Very few cities in Britain change character so completely within fifteen minutes of the middle.

The station sits below the city and almost everything else sits above it, so walking anywhere involves a climb. We take that out of the equation. Regular journeys include the hotels around Leopold Square and the Cathedral quarter, Meadowhall out on the M1, the Advanced Manufacturing Park at Catcliffe, and the long ascent west towards the moors that begins at the far end of Ecclesall Road.

The Peak District is fifteen minutes from the ring road, which changes the character of a stay entirely. Chatsworth, Bakewell and Haddon Hall sit within half an hour, Buxton and the Hope Valley a little further, and the drives over the tops towards Castleton are among the most enjoyable in England. Leeds and Nottingham are both around an hour for anyone combining cities in a single trip.

Sheffield has no airport of its own. Manchester is usually fifty to seventy minutes across the Woodhead or the M67, East Midlands roughly an hour south, and Leeds Bradford a similar distance north. From London the M1 runs directly and typically takes three and a half to four and a half hours; the train from St Pancras is quick and we meet it outside the station.
