The garden squares are the key to a calm arrival here. Princes Square, Kensington Gardens Square and Leinster Square are all one-way, with resident bays and short unloading stretches, and they are far more comfortable for a family with several cases than the Queensway kerb. For the larger hotels along the park we follow the doorman's direction onto the forecourt; where there is no forecourt we set down on the first side street rather than blocking a bus lane.

Two things reliably change the picture. Park events, whether the summer concerts or the winter fair at the Marble Arch end, put queues along Bayswater Road for hours either side and close the gates into the park to traffic. And Notting Hill Carnival, over the August bank holiday weekend, closes a wide area to the west and makes Westbourne Grove impassable; we plan those two days from Sussex Gardens and the Edgware Road side instead.

London traffic is predictable enough to plan around and too variable to ignore. Weekday mornings into the centre and the long crawl outward from four until seven are the two windows that reshape a schedule, and we quote timings that reflect them rather than a mapping application on a quiet Sunday. Evening runs and weekends are considerably freer, and airport legs are the ones most worth padding.

Availability in the capital is deeper than anywhere else in the country, so short-notice requests are frequently workable, even the same day. The exceptions are the obvious ones: December evenings, the days of a major sporting or state occasion, and any Saturday in the wedding season. For those, book when the date is set rather than when the week finally arrives.
