Notting Hill climbs west from Notting Hill Gate through Pembridge Road and Kensington Park Road towards Ladbroke Grove, with Westbourne Grove running east to west through its shopping heart. The terraces are pastel, the communal gardens behind them are private and unusually large, and the whole district feels looser than the stucco squares to the south. Our passengers are typically residents, families, and visitors who have taken a house here for a week rather than a hotel room.

The residential streets are narrow, lined with permit bays and often blocked by a skip or a delivery van, so a large vehicle is rarely the right choice for a doorstep collection. Portobello Road closes to traffic for the Saturday market along much of its length, and Golborne Road follows suit on Fridays. The August bank holiday carnival closes a very large area for two days, with diversions reaching well beyond it. Notting Hill sits outside the congestion charge zone.

The shopping is on Westbourne Grove and Ledbury Road, the antiques and market stalls on Portobello, and the restaurants scattered between Clarendon Cross and Golborne Road. It is a district people move around within rather than out of, so much of our work here is short local runs and evening journeys east into the West End. Holland Park and Kensington Gardens are both walkable, which means the car earns its keep on the longer legs.

The Westway is the great convenience of a W11 address. Heathrow is typically 30 to 55 minutes, quicker than almost any other central London postcode, and the M40 for Oxford and the Cotswolds is reached without touching the West End. Gatwick runs 70 to 110 minutes and is the awkward one. Luton is usually 50 to 85 minutes. For a Friday evening escape westward, Notting Hill is about the best starting point in London.
