The Championships run over a fortnight at the end of June and into July, with outside courts starting late morning and the show courts an hour or so later. A day ticket buys an unpredictable amount of tennis: two straight-sets matches and you are finished by mid-afternoon, or a five-setter under the roof and you are still there at half past ten at night. Add queuing, strawberries, rain and a great deal of walking between courts.

SW19 is a residential grid under controlled parking for the duration, with roads around the grounds managed by police and stewards. Driving yourself means leaving the car a long way out and walking up the hill, or paying for a space you may need for twelve hours. A chauffeur sets you down at an agreed corner within a short walk of the gates, waits nearby, and returns when you message, whether that is four in the afternoon or close to midnight.

Give yourself far more time than the map suggests. The A3 and the roads through Putney and Southfields carry the whole tournament, and the arrival hour is genuinely slow. Rain delays push everything back, so treat the return as a window and not a time. If you are heading into town for dinner afterwards, say so in advance and we will hold the car rather than releasing it; the gap between the last point and a table in Mayfair is smaller than it looks.

Two people travel comfortably in an S-Class, with space for coats, hats and the inevitable shopping from the grounds. A family of five or six is better in a V-Class, particularly on a hot day when a cool cabin waiting at the end matters more than it should. For a corporate group we will run vehicles in convoy on matched timings so that everyone leaves together rather than in instalments.
