The A75 is the main artery west, and it carries the freight moving between the Cairnryan ferries and the M6. It is single carriageway for most of its length with intermittent overtaking stretches, and behind a slow lorry the whole road settles to its pace. Sailing times bunch the traffic, so a run to Stranraer that flows in the middle of the morning can be considerably heavier an hour later. For anyone travelling by rail, Lockerbie is the useful stop on the West Coast Main Line, roughly twenty-five to thirty-five minutes from Dumfries, and a good many guests find the London train there faster than a connection through Glasgow. Dumfries station itself sits on the line to Kilmarnock and Carlisle with a lighter service. Whichever you use, a car meeting you at the platform removes the awkward part, because taxis at either station are not something to rely on late in the evening.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
