Nothing shapes travel in Lochaber more than this single road. The lochside section north of Tarbet is narrow, blind in places and shared with buses and lorries, and it regularly closes after a landslip or a fallen tree with no local alternative. Rannoch Moor and the Glencoe pass beyond it take snow early and hold it, and the exposed stretches see standing water and side winds through much of the winter. Ninety miles here honestly takes three hours, and pretending otherwise only produces a rushed drive.

West of the town the A830 to Mallaig is much improved but still narrow past Arisaig, and the ferry sailings at the end of it govern the whole day. The A86 through Glen Spean towards Newtonmore is the link to the A9 and the eastern Highlands, quiet but unlit and slow after dark.
