Falkirk's position on the motorway network is its whole practical story. The M9 runs east towards Edinburgh, the M876 and M80 west and north towards Glasgow and Stirling, and the A9 threads through the middle of the town as an ordinary road rather than the Highland trunk route people expect from the number. Junction queues at the eastern end build from about half past seven, and an incident on either motorway pushes everything onto the A803 through Camelon, which handles it badly.

The two stations catch people out often enough to be worth stating plainly. Falkirk Grahamston sits low in the town and carries the Edinburgh to Glasgow services by Cumbernauld and the Stirling line; Falkirk High is up the hill on the main Edinburgh to Glasgow route by Polmont. They are roughly a mile apart on foot and further by car, and the walk between them with luggage is not one to attempt in a hurry. We ask which one you are on before the day.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
