The Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route lifted a great deal of through traffic off Anderson Drive, and for journeys arriving from the south it is now usually the calmer way round to the north of the city. It is also an exposed road, and crosswinds on the higher sections are worth a steadier run rather than a brave one. Closer in, the harbour and ferry terminal approach can stall entirely while a sailing loads, so collection times there follow the boat rather than the clock.

West of the city the A93 narrows steadily as it climbs Deeside, and beyond Ballater the road over towards Braemar and the Cairnwell is among the first in Scotland to close under snow. Estate driveways in this country run for a mile or more with no lighting and few passing places, which makes an evening arrival something to agree with the house in advance. Midwinter light here goes by the middle of the afternoon, and sensible departure times reflect that.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does.
