There is no correct Cotswolds itinerary, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling a coach seat. The region is a loose scatter of villages built from the same golden limestone, connected by lanes too narrow and too pretty to hurry along. A day here works best when the route is a suggestion: four or five villages, a good lunch, and the freedom to stop because a view has appeared over a hedge.
Most days come in via Burford, whose high street falls away downhill to a bridge and is arguably the finest single street in the region. Bibury follows, with Arlington Row's weavers' cottages, and then the Slaughters — Upper and Lower, a mile apart along a stream, and quieter than their neighbours. Bourton-on-the-Water is busier and best taken early or late. Stow-on-the-Wold sits high on the wold with a market square and good antiques.
The northern Cotswolds are grander. Broadway has a wide green high street and a folly tower on the escarpment above with views said to reach thirteen counties. Chipping Campden and Snowshill are close by. Lunch is the anchor of the day, and we would encourage you to book something proper — a village inn, a farm shop kitchen, a country house dining room — and let the morning route be built to arrive there.
One honest note. We provide the car and the chauffeur, not commentary. Your chauffeur is a professional driver rather than a licensed guide, and while they will know the roads intimately, they will not narrate. Restaurant bookings and any admissions are arranged by you, though we will gladly advise on driving times between villages so lunch is not missed. A qualified guide can travel with you on request.
Country lanes are the reason to think about the vehicle. A Range Rover or a V-Class sits better on single-track roads and unmade drives than a low saloon does, particularly between October and March. If you are staying overnight at a country house, the higher car will earn its keep on the way in.

Reading a Day Across the Wolds
The driving times between villages are short and the total is not. Burford to Bibury is half an hour, Bibury to the Slaughters another thirty minutes, and the northern villages add an hour on top. From London you spend three hours on the road before the day even begins, so four or five villages plus lunch is the honest ceiling. Push for seven and you will remember car parks rather than places.
Where the day includes a house or a garden — Chedworth, Snowshill, Hidcote, Sudeley — admission is timed, arranged by you, and often the only fixed point in an otherwise free-form itinerary. Send us that slot and the village order rearranges itself around it. Lunch is the other anchor; book it and tell us where. Village centres have almost no parking, so set-down and collection points are agreed in advance rather than hunted for on arrival.
The walking is gentle and optional: most villages are a flat half mile end to end, though Arlington Row and the Slaughters involve unmade paths that turn to mud after rain. Wet days move indoors to a farm shop kitchen, an antiques dealer or a long lunch, and lose very little. Across two days we would keep the south for one and the north for the other. Your chauffeur drives only; a qualified guide is a separate arrangement we are glad to make.

Which Season to Choose
May and June give you blossom, long evenings and gardens at full stretch. September and October bring harvest light and thinner crowds, and are the months we would choose ourselves. High summer is lovely but Bibury and Bourton fill by ten, so those two go early or late in the day. Winter empties the villages completely and the pubs light their fires, which has its own strong argument.
Saturdays between May and September are the hardest dates to secure and the larger vehicles go first, so a month's notice is sensible. Weekday touring is far easier and considerably more pleasant. If you are taking two days with a night at a country house, book the hotel before you book us; the drive plan follows the bed, not the other way round.
