It is not long, but it is long enough to matter for a flight. We check the published times against your booking and, where a lift falls awkwardly, route via London Bridge or Tower Hill instead. The high-level walkways stay open, so people crossing on foot are unaffected.

Shad Thames rewards local knowledge. The cobbles are hard on a low car, the lane is narrow enough that two vehicles cannot pass, and the residential entrances are set back beneath the walkways. Maguire Street, Gainsford Street and Queen Elizabeth Street all give better standing room within a minute's walk. On the north side, the approaches around the Tower fill with coaches from mid-morning and St Katharine Docks is the calmer alternative.

London traffic is predictable enough to plan around and too variable to ignore.
