Soho occupies the block between Oxford Street, Regent Street, Charing Cross Road and Shaftesbury Avenue, and it is the densest part of the West End for restaurants, bars, private clubs, editing suites and small offices. Its character shifts by the hour: media and production during the day, dinner from seven, and something looser after ten. Our passengers here are usually out for the evening, or working in the film and music businesses that still fill the upper floors of Wardour Street and Dean Street.

Almost every Soho street is one way, several are pedestrianised, and Old Compton Street and parts of Dean Street and Frith Street have at times been given over to outdoor dining, which removes them from the map for a car entirely. The workable meeting points are the edges: Golden Square, Soho Square, Brewer Street, Great Marlborough Street and the Regent Street kerbs where stopping is permitted. Soho sits inside the congestion charge zone. On a Friday night we agree the pick-up corner before you go in, not after.

People come to Soho for dinner, for the theatres that ring it along Shaftesbury Avenue and towards Cambridge Circus, for the members' clubs on Dean and Greek Streets, and for the late music venues. It is also a working district — a screening, an edit, a recording session — where the finish time is genuinely unknown. Both cases are best handled by a car on call rather than a fixed collection, and by a chauffeur comfortable holding position two streets away.

Late journeys out of Soho are quick once you clear the immediate grid: Heathrow is typically 40 to 70 minutes after midnight and 50 to 85 during the day. Gatwick runs 60 to 100 minutes. For a morning flight from a Soho hotel we usually leave via Regent Street and the Westway rather than fighting Piccadilly. Home runs to Hampstead, Chelsea or the suburbs are the more common request, and the car is there whatever the hour.
