Junction 47 of the A1(M) at Allerton Park is the town's link to the national network, and the A59 from there is a fast and pleasant road that turns slow the moment there is an incident, because the alternatives through Knaresborough are narrow. The A61 south to Leeds carries the commuter load and queues from Harewood in both peaks, while the A658 to the airport is the quicker line for a flight but has its own bottleneck at Pool Bank.

The exhibition calendar governs this town more than the weather does. Convention centre weeks fill the hotels and the roads together, and the July agricultural show puts a great deal of traffic on the A61 and the showground approaches for three days.
