Junction 24 at Ainley Top and Junction 26 at Chain Bar are the two ways in, and the A629 between them is the spine of the district. Chain Bar backs up in both peaks and the A629 through Salterhebble carries roadworks with some regularity. The A58 to Leeds and the A646 up the Calder Valley towards Hebden Bridge and Todmorden are the scenic alternatives, and both are slower than they look because of the villages strung along them.

West of Ainley Top the M62 climbs to the highest point on the English motorway network, and it behaves accordingly, with crosswind, low cloud and snow that arrives while the valley below stays clear. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
