The A65 is the main artery, running down Airedale through Ilkley and Guiseley to Leeds and the other way towards Settle and Kendal. It is a good road with slow sections through the villages, and the stretch past Gargrave and Hellifield carries holiday traffic on summer weekends. The A59 east to Harrogate crosses Blubberhouses Moor, which is exposed and among the first roads in the district to be affected when snow arrives.

Inside the National Park the roads are the attraction rather than the obstacle, but they are genuinely slow: single track with passing places above Malham and Arncliffe, cattle grids, and sheep with no interest whatever in your schedule. We plan Dales days with generous timings and choose routes that are enjoyable rather than merely direct. Market days fill the High Street from early morning, so we collect from a side street instead.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
