Barking Creek splits the borough in a way that catches people out. There is no crossing between the A13 flyover and the river itself, so an address in Creekmouth or on Barking Riverside is reached by going out to the A13 and back in again rather than cutting across. Renwick Road and River Road are the ways in from the east, Choats Road from the west, and both carry a good deal of lorry traffic during the working day.

Heading into town, the A13 is fast as far as Canning Town and then becomes a decision. If the Blackwall Tunnel is on your route it is worth saying so early, because a northbound queue there can add half an hour without warning and the Silvertown crossing alongside it is often the calmer choice. For the City we usually stay on the A13 through Limehouse; for the West End the A12 and City Road can be kinder after seven in the evening.

London traffic is predictable enough to plan around and too variable to ignore. Weekday mornings into the centre and the long crawl outward from four until seven are the two windows that reshape a schedule, and we quote timings that reflect them rather than a mapping application on a quiet Sunday. Evening runs and weekends are considerably freer, and airport legs are the ones most worth padding.

Availability in the capital is deeper than anywhere else in the country, so short-notice requests are frequently workable, even the same day. The exceptions are the obvious ones: December evenings, the days of a major sporting or state occasion, and any Saturday in the wedding season. For those, book when the date is set rather than when the week finally arrives.
