The Bow interchange sits just north of here and it governs the morning. Southbound on the A12 towards the Blackwall Tunnel the queue starts early and lasts; the A13 westbound stiffens from around eight and eases by ten. For a City meeting we prefer the A11 through Bow and Mile End over the A13 flyover after nine, and for an airport we would far rather leave before seven than negotiate either of them.

River crossings are the other consideration. Blackwall is a few minutes away and the Silvertown crossing beside it has changed how the afternoon behaves, though neither is dependable at four o'clock on a Friday. For Kent or Gatwick we sometimes go east to the Dartford crossing instead when the tunnels are struggling. Stadium events at Stratford add pedestrian traffic to the station approaches for an hour either side, so on a fixture evening we collect from a residential turning rather than the interchange itself.

London traffic is predictable enough to plan around and too variable to ignore. Weekday mornings into the centre and the long crawl outward from four until seven are the two windows that reshape a schedule, and we quote timings that reflect them rather than a mapping application on a quiet Sunday. Evening runs and weekends are considerably freer, and airport legs are the ones most worth padding.

Availability in the capital is deeper than anywhere else in the country, so short-notice requests are frequently workable, even the same day. The exceptions are the obvious ones: December evenings, the days of a major sporting or state occasion, and any Saturday in the wedding season. For those, book when the date is set rather than when the week finally arrives.
