The A491 is Stourbridge's link to the M5 and the first road to fail when the motorway does. Between the Hagley turn and junction 3 it slows steadily from about half past seven, and southbound in the evening it is worse still. The A458 to Bridgnorth and the A449 north are the alternatives, and for an airport run we will sometimes use junction 4 instead of 3. The local hills add time in poor weather.

Kinver Edge and the Clent Hills bracket the town and fill with walkers on fine weekends, narrowing the lanes at Kinver, Enville and Clent to something a large car takes slowly. Wedding venues in those villages usually have long unlit drives, which we look at before the day. Stourbridge Junction has a car park that fills early and a short setting-down area, so meeting points are arranged and confirmed in writing.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
