The evening restrictions here are the thing visitors miss. Several streets around Rivington and Curtain Road are closed or effectively impassable on Friday and Saturday nights, and the pedestrian flow makes a kerbside pickup outside a bar unrealistic. We agree a meeting point at the outset, usually a corner on Great Eastern Street or the top of Curtain Road, and the chauffeur holds there rather than crawling through the crowd.

For early City starts the picture reverses entirely. Before seven, Shoreditch High Street and Bishopsgate are among the quickest roads into the Square Mile, and Old Street is calm. After eight it is faster to go around by the A1202 and approach from Aldgate. Heading north and east, the A10 and Hackney Road serve well before the school run and rather poorly for an hour or so afterwards, which is worth knowing before a breakfast meeting is agreed.

London traffic is predictable enough to plan around and too variable to ignore. Weekday mornings into the centre and the long crawl outward from four until seven are the two windows that reshape a schedule, and we quote timings that reflect them rather than a mapping application on a quiet Sunday. Evening runs and weekends are considerably freer, and airport legs are the ones most worth padding.

Availability in the capital is deeper than anywhere else in the country, so short-notice requests are frequently workable, even the same day. The exceptions are the obvious ones: December evenings, the days of a major sporting or state occasion, and any Saturday in the wedding season. For those, book when the date is set rather than when the week finally arrives.
