Southbound journeys begin with a decision. The Rotherhithe Tunnel is a minute away at the eastern end of the Highway, but it is narrow, low and restricted, so anything larger than a saloon goes another way. Tower Bridge is pleasant and unpredictable. Blackwall, reached along the A13 and the A12 approach, is the workhorse, and the Silvertown crossing beside it changes the calculation on a bad afternoon. Heading west, the Limehouse Link into the Highway feeds you neatly on to Tower Hill and the Embankment, and before half past seven that is a quick and rather handsome way into town. Later we often prefer Commercial Road and the A11 through Whitechapel despite the lights, because the Highway backs up at the Tower. For a Canary Wharf meeting, Aspen Way and the estate roads are simpler than they look once your chauffeur knows the barriers.

London traffic is predictable enough to plan around and too variable to ignore. Weekday mornings into the centre and the long crawl outward from four until seven are the two windows that reshape a schedule, and we quote timings that reflect them rather than a mapping application on a quiet Sunday. Evening runs and weekends are considerably freer, and airport legs are the ones most worth padding.

Availability in the capital is deeper than anywhere else in the country, so short-notice requests are frequently workable, even the same day. The exceptions are the obvious ones: December evenings, the days of a major sporting or state occasion, and any Saturday in the wedding season.
