The A21 is the borough's artery and it behaves like two different roads joined in the middle. Between Lewisham and Bromley it is an urban high street with bus lanes and constant side turnings; south of Locksbottom it becomes a fast dual carriageway running down to the M25 at Junction 4. The changeover around Bromley Common is where the queues form, and they build from early afternoon. Orpington High Street has a one-way arrangement of its own that is easy to miss first time.

Schools and hospitals generate the other reliable peaks. The roads around Bickley and Chislehurst are congested from half past eight in term time, and the Princess Royal at Farnborough Common brings steady traffic to its junction with the A21. Out at Biggin Hill the approach climbs a long exposed hill on the Main Road and is occasionally fog-bound in winter, so for a private departure from there we allow additional time rather than assuming the drive matches the mileage on the map.

London traffic is predictable enough to plan around and too variable to ignore. Weekday mornings into the centre and the long crawl outward from four until seven are the two windows that reshape a schedule, and we quote timings that reflect them rather than a mapping application on a quiet Sunday. Evening runs and weekends are considerably freer, and airport legs are the ones most worth padding.

Availability in the capital is deeper than anywhere else in the country, so short-notice requests are frequently workable, even the same day. The exceptions are the obvious ones: December evenings, the days of a major sporting or state occasion, and any Saturday in the wedding season.
