The B6318 was laid along the line of the wall in the eighteenth century and it still drives like it: long straights, blind summits and almost no lighting. In daylight it is one of the great English roads. In February, with ice on the tops and a low sun, it is somewhere to be respected, and we will sometimes route by the A69 and come up to a site from the south instead. Sheep on the road are not a rare event here.

Hexham's own station is on the Tyne Valley line, which is useful for Newcastle and Carlisle but not for London, so southbound guests generally join the East Coast route at Newcastle. By road the capital is somewhere between five and six and a quarter hours, and the last two hours of a late return are on roads that reward a fresh driver. We would rather discuss an overnight at the outset than a heroic day that ends badly.

Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
